This is a Traditional Rural Event where children with Calves, Kids and Lambs, compete for cups and ribbons in rearing and leading. About 30 children per year enter their pets. Pets are chosen by mid Term 3, children keep a Pet Diary and the Pet Day is always the first Thursday of Term 4. This is largely ‘an out of school’ activity so children rely on support and guidance from parents to keep motivated and to do their best.
Children who do not live on farms are often able to ‘adopt’ a farm animal and experience the Agriculture Day experience, then leave the pet on the farm where it belongs.
Local people with farming knowledge judge the pets and cups and ribbons are awarded.
